He is the most famous mathematician in world history—and we know practically nothing about him. No year of birth, no place of death, no portrait, not a word about his family. And yet, from his pen came a book that was used for 2,300 years and, after the Bible, became the most widely distributed work in the Western world: Euclid of Alexandria's Elements. This comprehensive biographical documentary traces the life of a man who has become invisible behind his own work. It begins in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I, in a city barely a generation old that was already the intellectual center of the known world—with the Museion, the famous library, and a community of scholars such as had never existed before. The film retraces what Euclid encountered and what he made of it: the Pythagoreans' discovery of immeasurable quantities, which shattered the "everything is number" worldview; the preliminary work of Eudoxus and Theaetetus; the spirit of Plato's Academy. He shows how, in the Elements, a edifice of hundreds of theorems arises from twenty-three definitions, five postulates, and five common concepts—and how rigorously this architect applied himself, even to the point of renouncing the rigid compass and all numbers in geometry. The thirteen books of the work are discussed in detail: from the plane, through circles and the theory of ratios, to number theory with the Euclidean algorithm, the infinity of prime numbers, and perfect numbers—and finally to the proof that there can be exactly five regular solids and no sixth. The lost writings are also addressed, including that enigmatic book of fallacies, intended to teach how to recognize false proofs, of which not a single line survives. Particular emphasis is placed on the work's reception in German: on the Augsburg printer Erhard Ratdolt, who was the first in Venice to print geometric figures together with the text; on the unfinished printing program of Regiomontanus; on Albrecht Dürer's *Underweysung der Meß*; on Wilhelm Holtzmann, known as Xylander, who translated Euclid into German for the first time; on Christoph Clavius ​​of Bamberg; and on Johannes Kepler, who sought the blueprint of the heavens in the thirteenth book of *Elements*. The film's second major arc leads to the most famous open problem in the history of science: the fifth postulate. For two millennia, scholars from Proclus to Omar Khayyam to Giovanni Girolamo Saccheri and Johann Heinrich Lambert attempted to prove it—and in doing so, without realizing it, were already in the midst of a new geometry. The film recounts the silence of Carl Friedrich Gauss and his fear of the "cry of the Boeotians," the fate of János Bolyai, the works of Lobachevsky, Schweikart, and Taurinus, Bernhard Riemann's inaugural lecture in Göttingen in the presence of the elderly Gauss, David Hilbert's foundations of geometry, and finally, Albert Einstein's concept of curved space. Controversial questions—Euclid's dates of birth and death, the reliability of ancient sources, the theory of a collaborative authorship, the interpretation of the work's ending—are juxtaposed instead of declaring one reading to be certain. Where the sources are silent, this film states that they are silent.
