COMMENT ORGANISER LES ALLÉES DU JARDIN : TRACÉ, DIMENSIONS, PROPORTIONS, COMPOSITION, IMAGINATION
In this first installment of the "Landscaper's Perspectives" section, NewsJardinTV's new columnist, Joëlle Roubache, is joined by our editor-in-chief, Patrick Mioulane. Together, they offer insightful ideas and advice on an essential garden element: paths. Exploring the magnificent grounds of the Château de Vendeuvre (Calvados), our two experts begin by discussing the straight paths common in large historic residences, such as the property where they are located. The straight path is primarily intended for access to the house because it creates a certain majesty at the entrance. Although it may seem monotonous, the straight path is important for highlighting a perspective or an important element: a house, a statue, a feature in the landscape, etc. It is also the most functional layout. The proportions between length and width do not imply any precise rule. However, the dimensions must be in a balanced relationship with the height of a human being. The path should be punctuated with living (trees) or built (statues, pergolas) structural elements, but the dimensions should not create a feeling of overwhelm or suffocation. Today, even in prestigious estates, we are seeking more privacy and naturalness. This is what led our two gardeners to move from the sumptuous, straight path to a paved path that winds through the undergrowth. The latter creates a canopy that generates a more captivating and charming feeling, which can also be created with pergolas. The important thing in a garden is to create open spaces and areas that close in to create a cocoon-like feel. Winding paths create the feeling of being able to move around more naturally. Joëlle also emphasizes differences in level, which are very important for creating a ground that rises and falls, as is commonly found in nature. Flat ground works well for small areas, especially in urban areas. On a large property, a vast, flat area gives the impression of a sports field (especially when it's grassed), and it's then necessary to sculpt the space. This can be achieved through earthworks or by playing with the vegetation. The winding driveway aims to divert the eye, artificially but effectively creating a sense of volume that artificially but effectively erases the impression of flatness. For Joëlle, a driveway is a scar in the landscape. It must be erased with plays of light and shadow, or by creating it slightly lower than the plantings so that their surface, generally lighter, doesn't stand out. But never forget the use of the driveway. Its dimensions and surface must remain functional. Our two experts continue their reflections by walking along a large grassed driveway, which offers the advantage of being a permeable and inexpensive surface. A lawn transition is less interventionist in the garden. It respects the natural microfauna. The appeal lies in the harmony and contrast achieved between the textures. On the one hand, the smooth appearance of the lawn is enhanced by the whimsical plantings in the beds that run from side to side. While discussing the different areas of the garden she visits, Joëlle shares her impressions with us, using both explanatory and creative commentary. Our landscaper also casts a critical eye on the site and suggests some very interesting improvement solutions. This is a highly insightful report that provides an excellent foundation for successfully creating and distributing circulation paths in a garden. It is illustrated with numerous examples seen in remarkable gardens, which will undoubtedly give you valuable design ideas, while ensuring a very enjoyable experience.
