Good morning from Assisi 🤩 We begin our visit with the majestic Basilica of Santa Chiara. The building stands out with its elegant simplicity, constructed of white and pink stone from Mount Subasio, which creates a delicate chromatic contrast in the sunlight. The interior features a single nave, spacious and bright, punctuated by pointed arches and cross vaults that recall the simple yet solemn Gothic style. Descending into the crypt, we reach one of the most evocative spaces in the basilica. Here, in a secluded and intimate setting, the body of Saint Clare is kept, visible in a shrine beneath the altar. ☺️ Leaving the majestic Basilica of Santa Chiara behind us, we walk through the quiet, cobbled streets of Assisi's historic center. After a few minutes, the elegant Piazza del Comune, the true beating heart of the city, opens up before us. This square, built on the ancient Roman forum, is today the hub of city life, a place where art, spirituality, and everyday life meet. 🤗 But what immediately catches the eye is the unmistakable façade of the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built inside an ancient Roman temple from the 1st century BC, once dedicated to the goddess Minerva. 🏛️ The six Corinthian columns and the classical pediment emerge from the medieval buildings with timeless elegance, testifying to Assisi's extraordinary historical stratification. The church stands on the foundations of a Roman temple from the 1st century BC, and this fusion of styles, from ancient to Baroque, makes the place unique, a true meeting of the classical world and the Christian faith. ✝️ Leaving the majestic Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva behind us, the streets become narrower, the alleys gently climb toward the upper part of the city, and after a few minutes' walk, the solemn and luminous Cathedral of San Rufino appears. ⛪️ With its imposing Romanesque façade, San Rufino is one of the most important places of spirituality in Assisi. Entering the Cathedral, you are greeted by an atmosphere of silence and light, where spirituality blends with the majesty of Romanesque art. The sober and elegant interior is divided into three naves punctuated by massive pillars and round arches, which lead the gaze toward the raised presbytery. We slowly descend into the Cathedral's crypt, one of the oldest and most evocative spaces in this sacred place. Beyond the silent sacredness of the crypt, a precious and little-known space opens up: the Diocesan Museum. 🤩 And here we are, finally, before one of the most iconic and spiritual places in the world: the Basilica of Saint Francis. A majestic panorama unfolds before us. 😍 On the right, in a reserved yet powerful position, we find the famous equestrian statue of Saint Francis, depicted returning disarmed from one of his most profound experiences: a tired, thoughtful, humble Francis. We begin to slowly descend the staircase that leads us to one of the most mystical and evocative spaces in the entire complex: the Lower Basilica. Upon crossing the threshold, we are immediately greeted by an atmosphere of profound quiet and contemplation. The soft light, filtered by small side windows, gives way to warm shadows and golden reflections. 🎨 The cross vaults, painted in deep blue with floral motifs and golden stars, open above us, creating a symbolic sky under which to walk. ✨ Slowly, I begin to climb the stairs leading to the Upper Basilica. I arrive in the courtyard of the Sacred Convent, a spacious, orderly space, almost suspended in time. From the silent courtyard of the Sacred Convent, we enter the Upper Basilica, a slender, luminous space, a veritable treasure chest of light and color. The high cross vaults, decorated in deep blue with golden stars, rise above us like a spiritual sky, and before us opens one of the most refined and silent elements of this sacred place: the carved wooden choir, a masterpiece of late medieval inlaid art, created between the late 14th and early 15th centuries. But what is most striking are the frescoes. 🖼️ Along the nave, like an open book, unfolds the famous Cycle of the Life of Saint Francis, attributed to Giotto and his workshop. 🎨 Scene after scene, the story comes to life: Francis renouncing earthly goods before his father, preaching to the birds, healing lepers, receiving the stigmata. A short flight of stairs leads me to the crypt, where the tomb of Saint Francis is kept.
