HAKI Africa, in collaboration with Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), HAKI YETU, VOCAL Africa, and the Malindi Community Human Rights Centre, expresses deep concern over the resurgence of cult-related activities reminiscent of the Shakahola massacre. On July 25, 2025, our team attempted to access Kwa Binzaro village in Malindi, Kilifi County, following credible reports of four severely malnourished survivors rescued, human remains recovered—including a body and skulls—and 11 suspects linked to cultic indoctrination detained in Malindi Law Courts pending investigations. However, upon arrival, we were denied access by security officers, who have since barricaded the area. This denial of access prevents independent human rights monitoring, immediate humanitarian support, and the collection of critical information for affected families. We call for transparency in ongoing investigations, immediate humanitarian intervention for survivors and their families, full accountability for those perpetuating these harmful doctrines, and unhindered access for human rights organisations to monitor and assist. HAKI Africa’s Executive Director, Yusuf Aboubakar, while addressing the press in Shakahola, emphasized that the ongoing cult-related deaths amount to a mass loss of life that can be considered a massacre with the potential to constitute crimes against humanity. He further warned that the Kenyan government risks facing international accountability, including possible action before the International Criminal Court - ICC, if it fails to protect its citizens from such atrocities. The tragic events of Shakahola should never be allowed to repeat. Vulnerable communities must be protected from radicalisation, exploitation, and neglect.
