SEJARAH BANDARA POLONIA

Polonia derives from the Latin name for Poland. This name is inextricably linked to Baron Ludwig Michalski, a Polish national, for his services to the Sultan of Deli, Mahmud Al Rasyid, by establishing the "Gardekorps nach europäischem Vorbild," a Sultan's Guard Corps similar to the royal guard corps in Europe. For his services to the Deli kingdom, the Sultan granted him a vast land grant. On December 14, 1869, Baron Michalski received a land concession contract covering 2,000 plots in the Kampung Baroe and Lama Urung Sukapiring landscapes. The contract stipulated a 75-year land use right. Michalski named the land Polonia, after his homeland, Poland. He then established the Polonia Plantation, which focused on tobacco cultivation. In 1875, Michalski returned to Switzerland. Four years later, in 1879, he sold the lease of the Polonia plantation to Deli Maatschappij, a Deli Tobacco company owned by a Dutchman named Jacob Nienhuys. In 1924, Deli became busy when news reached the Dutch aviator Jan Thomassen Thusessink van der Hoop that he would fly a Fokker from Europe to the Dutch East Indies for the first time in history. Therefore, the colonial government in Medan took the initiative to make the Polonia plantation land abandoned by Baron Michalski into Medan's first alternative airport.
