By far the biggest mistake F1 visa students make in the OPT application process is that of choosing the OPT start date to be printed on the EAD card. Many F1 international student believe that they should wait until they receive a job offer before they can apply for their OPT and choose the OPT start date. The problem that arises by doing so is that you risk not getting your EAD card on time and might lose a job offer. Regardless of where you are in the job search process, you should strongly apply for the OPT as early as possible, and choose a start date that falls within 60 days after your date of graduation. In the case that you do not have a job offer at the time of applying for your OPT, I recommend you select an OPT start date that falls anywhere between the 30th day to the 45th after your date of graduation.
