The topic of relationships between men and women has always been part of Jewish tradition. The first commandment in the Torah is "be fruitful and multiply," and this alone demonstrates their importance. They define the foundations of family and marital relations, everyday behavior, and the structure of the synagogue. The Torah imposed strict prohibitions on close inbreeding and intercourse with animals. These norms differed from the more liberal rules of other cultures of the ancient Near East. In this lecture, we will consider: how love and marital intimacy were perceived in biblical times; what other prohibitions the Torah established and how they differed from earlier traditions; what is considered permissible in marriage; how rabbis later reinterpreted stories from the Tanakh, creating vivid and sometimes unexpected images associated with physical intimacy.
