Dejar de luchar con el acrílico: agua, medium e intención

Welcome to the RAIIM Group. In this tutorial, we'll tackle one of the most basic—yet crucial—decisions in acrylic painting: how to properly dilute the paint. Water or acrylic medium? While it may seem like a simple choice, it determines whether a brushstroke looks vibrant, crisp, and professional, or dull, washed out, and uncontrolled. Drawing on the work and explanations of Laura Palacios and Rodolfo Im, we'll explore what actually happens at a material level when we dilute acrylic with water and why, in excess, water breaks down the binder's structure, weakening the color, shine, and definition. In contrast, we'll analyze acrylic medium as a natural extension of the paint: the same resin, without pigment. It's a tool that allows for fluidity, transparency, and glazing without sacrificing intensity or adhesion. We'll also explain when it's appropriate to use water, for example, for backgrounds, atmospheres, and distant subjects, and when medium is essential for details, glazes, and foreground elements.
