"Los viejos estandartes" (The Old Banners) has been the official anthem of the Chilean Army since 1976. It is inspired by the return of General Manuel Baquedano and the Chilean Army to the city of Valparaíso in 1881 during the War of the Pacific. Its lyrics were written by Jorge Inostrosa, and its music was composed in 1966 by Willy Bascuñán. In 1966, Chilean musician Willy Bascuñán, a member of Los Cuatro Cuartos, contacted Chilean writer Jorge Inostrosa Cuevas to request support in composing music for the 1955 novel Adiós al Séptimo de Línea (Goodbye to the Seventh of the Line). During a meeting, Inostrosa acknowledged having some knowledge of poetry and agreed to help Willy Bascuñán write some pieces that he would later set to music in a neo-folklore style. One of the first pieces Inostrosa presented to Willy Bascuñán was "Los viejos estandartes," and Jorge Inostrosa himself asked Willy Bascuñán if he could set this piece to music in the style of a military march, to which Bascuñán immediately agreed. In 1966, when Willy Bascuñán presented "Los viejos estandartes" to Chino Urquidi, director of Los Cuatro Cuartos, there were several arguments. Los Cuatro Cuartos commonly performed Latin and folk music, but never military marches. Urquidi asked Bascuñán to change the song, considering "Los viejos estandartes" inappropriate for the band. Urquidi objected to this suggestion. A day later, Willy Bascuñán managed to convince Urquidi to arrange and set the song to music, so that same afternoon in 1966, the march was arranged and its music composed by Bascuñán. By the late 1960s, the march's popularity was so great that Lieutenant Colonel Jorge Fernando Castro Castro adapted the march's scores so that it could be performed by military bands. Finally, in a contest held to choose the official anthem of the Chilean Army, "Los viejos estandartes" won, becoming the official march of that institution since June 14, 1976.
