Greek-speakers of Pontus, Turkey (Part 2)
I spent 1 week in the Black Sea Mountains of Turkey close to the border with Georgia in late July to experience Pontic Greek. It's very different from modern Greek, so much so that I needed a guide to help with translations. The dialect was isolated from the Greek-speaking world for nearly 1000 years so has preserved some very archaic elements and also absorbed loan words from Turkish, Persian, and Arabic. Greek-speaking Christians were expelled from Turkey following an agreement with Greece to exchange populations based on religion in 1922. Greek-speakers who converted to Islam at some point (likely in the last 200 to 400 years) were allowed to stay. Pontic Greek is an increasingly endangered language. In this video, I speak largely to older people. Their children can understand but not respond.@tom_traveler
