The long straight steel then come out from the water curving upward, which is exactly the shape of a Japanese sword. This process is called Yakiire (Ya-ki-i-re, 焼き入れ), which is carried out in order to harden the blade of the sword. It is one of the most important processes in Japanese sword making. However, have you ever seen how a Japanese sword changes its shape during the Yakiire process? Have you ever wondered what is happening to the sword during this process?
