In 1987, Hasbro built an entire fantasy world around a single innovation: real holographic images embedded in the chest of every action figure. Turn the toy under the light, and a lion, shark, or dragon appeared to float inside its armor. It had a cartoon from the studio behind Transformers, a voice cast stacked with animation legends, and a second wave of toys already deep in development. Then almost all of it disappeared. The cartoon stopped after thirteen episodes. The comic was cancelled halfway through its final storyline. And an entire second generation of figures, sixteen-plus characters, six new vehicles, an ambitious playset called the Holodrome, never made it to a single store shelf.
