Kilt Pins for Women? Can You Use Any Old Brooch Or Pin?

We were asked by a woman in our audience: “Can I use a larger women's brooch as a kilt pin? Especially one that is short and wide (horizontal) rather than tall and narrow (vertical)” The basic rules of thumb for kilt pin aesthetics are the same for both men and women wearing kilts and kilted skirts. That is…there is no rule about what you are “allowed’ to use as a kilt pin. Most kilt pins are long and skinny - the sword form being the standard. However in the early days, kilt pins were in fact round and worn higher on the kilt. A few gents, and we find the majority of lasses, enjoy using non-kilt-pin objects such as small brooches, novelty pins, cap badges and such as kilt pins. Since the modern kilt pin is almost purely a decoration, there’s no reason not to have a little fun with it. That said, we have observed over the years that there are certain shapes and proportions that lend themselves to a better look.
