Phinehas, Yeshua & the Spear of Zeal That Stopped the Plague – Torah Portion Pinchas

After the fatal seduction of the Moabite women, who had allured the men of Israel into fornication and idolatry, a deadly plague engulfed the camp, killing thousands. Adding insult to injury, Zimri (a prince of Simeon) and Cozbi (a princess of Midian) publicly flaunted their illegitimate relationship before the congregation. This had provoked Pinchas, the grandson of Aaron, to rise up with his spear, go to the tent of the fornicators and execute justice. At the beginning of this week’s parsha, Pinchas is rewarded for his zealous act. YHVH commends Pinchas with an everlasting covenant of peace and proclaims that Pinchas had turned back the wrath of YAH from among the people, the plague that had resulted in the death of thousands. Another census is then taken of all able-bodied men between 20 and 60, because nearly 40 years after the first census, an entirely new nation has occupied the wilderness. Moses is then instructed on how the land is to be divided by lot among the tribes and families of Israel, after which the Torah laws of inheritance are given. Moses empowers Joshua by laying his hands upon him and pronouncing a blessing, officially ordaining him as the successor who would lead the people into the land of Israel. The Parsha concludes by detailing the daily offerings and those brought on the various significant days of the Hebrew calendar, including the Feasts of YAH.
