Werkzaamheden Julianakanaal sluis Born, vullen met water, Drone beelden 29-03-2025

(I decided not to film the entire canal because there is practically little to see here now). Deepening and widening: A project was started in 2022 to make the canal between Berg and Obbicht suitable for two-barge pusher shipping (class Vb): ships with a length of up to 190 metres, a width of up to 11.4 m and a draught of up to 3.5 m. On 23 February 2023, a construction pit at Obbicht, which took up half of the canal, filled with water, after which work there was halted. In order to remove the construction pit, Rijkswaterstaat announced that the canal would have to be closed to all traffic for at least four months from October 2024. The option of keeping the canal partly open during the work was considered too dangerous. From 12 August 2024, the canal between Berg aan de Maas and Born was closed to all shipping over a length of four kilometres. The canal was temporarily drained for the deepening and widening work. A dam was built at Berg, after which the water slowly drained out of the canal at the lock at Born. During the closure, shipping traffic had to take a considerable detour, via Belgium and the Kreekrak locks in Zeeland. The costs of the work were 179 million euros higher than previously estimated. The project ultimately cost around one billion euros. The canal was pumped full of water again from 27 March 2025. It is expected that commercial shipping will be allowed to enter the canal again on 15 April. Access for recreational shipping will follow at a later date. 4K. #Julianakanaal #Born #Berg #Works
