She is a US Liberty ship. Her masts are still above the waterline. Her holds still contain an estimated 1,400 tons of unexploded World War II munitions — including 286 blockbuster bombs, each fused, each capable of independent detonation. She is 30 miles east of central London. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency maintains a permanent exclusion zone. The Ministry of Defence has not removed the cargo in 81 years. A 1970 New Scientist analysis concluded that a sympathetic detonation of the full payload would produce a 300-metre water column, a 5-metre tsunami across the Medway, and shatter every window in Sheerness, Sheppey, and parts of Southend. Modern Maritime & Coastguard Agency survey reports — released annually since 2009 — show the wreck is structurally degrading. The bow section is collapsing. The forward hold cracks are widening year over year. Nobody is removing the bombs. The official reason is that any attempt to recover them risks setting them off. So the policy is to wait. To watch the cracks. To re-issue the exclusion zone. And to hope the next storm surge across the Thames Estuary doesn't shift the hull the wrong way.
