From Misty Kodaikanal to Divine Srirangam | Trichy Road Trip | EP-05 #indicoverlander Episode 5: A Change of Plans – Kodaikanal, Madurai, Trichy & Back to Pondicherry As our stay in Kodaikanal came to an end, we packed our bags and began our descent from the misty hills of the Western Ghats. The winding mountain roads offered one last opportunity to soak in the beauty of Kodaikanal before we rejoined the plains of Tamil Nadu. Our original itinerary for the day was simple—drive to Trichy, spend the night there and continue our journey the following day. However, road trips often have a way of creating opportunities for spontaneous decisions. As we made our way down from the hills, a new idea emerged. Since Madurai was within reach, we decided to alter our plans and head towards the historic temple city instead. The prospect of seeing the famed Meenakshi Amman Temple was simply too tempting to ignore. The drive to Madurai was pleasant and as we entered the bustling city, the towering gopurams of the Meenakshi Temple soon appeared on the horizon. Even from a distance, the temple's magnificent architecture commanded attention. The colourful sculptures adorning the soaring towers stood as a testament to centuries of artistic excellence and devotion. Our excitement, however, was soon tempered by a practical challenge. Travelling by road means that accommodation is not just about a comfortable room—it is also about finding a safe and convenient place for the vehicle. We spent considerable time searching for a hotel that offered proper parking facilities while remaining within our budget. Despite checking multiple options, we were unable to find a suitable place that met both requirements. As the afternoon progressed, we realized that continuing our search would leave little time for sightseeing. Although we were able to admire the grandeur of the Meenakshi Temple from outside while moving through the city, we could not visit the shrine or have darshan of the deity as we had hoped. While there was certainly a sense of disappointment, this was one of those moments that every road traveller encounters. Not every plan works out perfectly, and sometimes practicality has to take precedence over aspiration. Accepting the situation, we decided to return to our original plan and continue onwards to Tiruchirappalli, popularly known as Trichy. The drive was smooth and by evening we reached the city, checked into our hotel, and relaxed after an eventful day that had taken us through an unexpected detour. Later in the evening, we visited the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam. One of the largest functioning temple complexes in the world, the temple impressed us with its towering gopurams, vast courtyards, intricate architecture and deeply spiritual atmosphere. As the temple came alive with evening prayers and devotional activities, the serene ambiance offered a welcome contrast to the hectic search for accommodation earlier in the day. Walking through the sacred corridors and witnessing the devotion of countless pilgrims made for a truly memorable experience. In many ways, the visit to Srirangam became the spiritual highlight of the journey that we had originally hoped to experience in Madurai. The following morning, after a restful night in Trichy, we began our drive towards Pondicherry. The roads carried us across the heart of Tamil Nadu before eventually leading us back to the coast. As we conclude this chapter of our South India road adventure, we are reminded that every journey has its own surprises. Sometimes it is these unplanned moments that become the most cherished memories of the road. Thank you for travelling with us on this journey.
