BR in the 1990s North Camp Station & Class 37 action in March 1993
In March of 1993 I was lucky enough to capture the last of the oil trains to leave the terminal at North Camp on the Reading - Guildford line. On the 15th March 1993 this was hauled by 37892 aptly named "Ripple Lane" as this was the trains destination. Within months of this clip being taken the station had changed dramatically what with the demise of the oil terminal and a new road overbridge beside the level crossing to ease the congestion at the barriers. Sadly very little in the way of locomotive hauled trains run through here today, on the other hand our next location the day after still see's a variety of locomotive hauled trains mainly 66 class. At Aberthaw East junction we see a train emerging from Aberthaw Power Station then shortly after a train arrives double headed by 37801 (not 37601 as described in the clip) and 37702. After unloading the train the same is seen leaving the Power Station with the empties. Next we move further West to Port Talbot and Margam where several more trains are witnessed one from the steel works headed by 37798. Nearer to the Train Depot of Margam where the lines from the works converge with the mainline from Swansea to Cardiff a plethora of different trains could be seen in those days and a small selection was seen on this a typical afternoon with an eastbound parcels train hauled by a RES class 47 # 47594 ,an up HST service for London Paddington, and more locomotive hauled freight. The signal here PT 8 referring to, it being controlled from Port Talbot Box, is a popular stop for crew changes using the depot at Margam. Hopefully I will get more clips done over the coming period.
