The NATO summit in Ankara concluded with an appearance of unity, even as tensions and fears about the Alliance's future have never been higher. Three major winners emerged from the meeting: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who capitalized on the presence of world leaders to bolster his diplomatic prestige despite his domestic difficulties; Donald Trump, whose influence and whims once again dictated the tone of the discussions; and Volodymyr Zelensky, who secured concrete signs of support, such as the possibility for Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles under license. Yet, behind the declarations of unity and mutual affection, the cracks are very real. Trump, ever unpredictable, alternated between threats and flattery, criticizing the Europeans for their lack of financial and military commitment. European leaders, fearing a US withdrawal or a cut in aid to Ukraine, have adopted a subservient stance, making numerous concessions and purchasing military equipment from the United States to appease the president. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has taken this logic to its extreme, preferring submission to firmness, at the risk of discrediting Europe in the eyes of Washington. But tensions are not limited to NATO. Trump has reiterated his threats to annex Greenland, reminding everyone that this issue remains unresolved despite united European opposition. Furthermore, Syria, removed from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism, could benefit from an economic boost, while Ukraine, although supported, remains a stumbling block in its accession to the Alliance. This summit has therefore confirmed that NATO is still standing, but at the cost of a subservience to Europe that raises questions about the Alliance's future.
