Thanks to Craig Villiers from the Audi Press Office garage for revving the engine so I could record the exhaust sound. Big thanks to Audi UK for inviting me to the launch of the new A4 and S4 range. As a long term fan of fast Audi estates and someone who understands the benefits of diesel power, I was understandably intrigued by the fact that Audi have decided to switch the S4 from petrol power to diesel. This has been widely seen as a peculiar move from Audi seeing as diesel is being demonised by the press here in the UK and is generally viewed with caution across Europe. However Audi don't do things without careful research and taking the diesel sentiment out of the equation, this car does hold a lot of appeal with 0-60 times as good as identical to the old petrol car (4.8 saloon, 4.9 Avant vs 4.7 & 4.9 for the old S4 respectively), 700 nm of torque for blistering in gear performance (torque peak is the same as C7 RS6!), a realistic 40 mpg + as tested on the new, stricter WLTP cycle which means competitive Co2 emissions and attractively low Benefit In Kind (BIK) tax rates for company car buyers, who let's face it are the biggest purchasers of these kinds of vehicles - the BIK rules continue to favour diesel vehicles. The other thing to consider is that the previous 3.0T petrol versions of S4 didn't actually sell very well so Audi has nothing to lose. Find out if it all stacks up in reality by watching this video! With regards to the exhaust tips, apologies for any ambiguity, the left side are real, the right side are fake like S6, bit disappointing but hey. Please note this video was filmed under a lot of pressure as there was only one S4 Avant available on the day and it was in huge demand all day long with journalists as well as vloggers who need the car for longer when filming. Hence why the driving footage was filmed in an S4 saloon & misses out loads of details. There was also a camera technical issue which occurred as a result of having no time to perform my usual quality assurance checks. So it's not as thorough as I'd like it to be but hopefully it still provides an entertaining and educating watch.
