Por que as Cinco Vias de Tomás não me convencem da existência de Deus (Aula aberta)

In this video, Professor Vitor Lima presents the reasons why Thomas Aquinas's five ways do not convince him as proofs of God's existence. Starting from a position of intellectual respect for the grandeur of the Summa Theologica, he argues that admiring the internal coherence of a system does not imply accepting its metaphysical conclusions. The analysis covers the main points of the Thomistic ways: the problem of non sequitur between the "first mover," the "first cause," "absolute perfection," and the personal God of theism; the critique of the supposed problem of infinite regress; the possibility of understanding the universe itself as a necessary reality; the physicalist objection to the fourth way and the idea of objective degrees of perfection; Finally, the rejection of the fifth way is based on a non-teleological reading of nature, influenced by evolutionary biology. Throughout the presentation, Professor Vitor Lima argues that the God hypothesis, as formulated in classical theism, is explanatoryly dispensable. Instead of resorting to a transcendent entity, he defends an ontology centered on the self-sufficiency of physical reality, the emergence of complexity, and the intersubjective construction of values. This video is also an invitation to serious philosophical debate, especially with readers and scholars of the Thomistic tradition. Chapters 00:00 Introduction and respect for the intellectual architecture of Thomas Aquinas 02:02 The razor of explanatory economy and the God hypothesis 02:53 The leap from the first mover to the personal God 04:55 Infinite return and necessary being 07:57 The fourth way and the critique of moral objectivity 10:00 The fifth way and the question of finality in nature 11:57 Conclusion: God as a disposable hypothesis Final observation. For those who have read this far, here is a silent provocation: sometimes, the most honest disagreement is that which arises from sincere admiration for the intellectual adversary. _________________________________ Our purpose is to broaden your thinking. We, the founders, Vitor Lima (graduate in Philosophy, UFRRJ, master's student in Metaphysics, UnB) and Evelyn Lima (graduate and master's in Philosophy, UFRRJ), have observed the need for answers in a globalized world, beyond the superficial ones usually available. Our vision is to be your reference in Public Philosophy, showing that philosophical thinking is for everyone, although not for just anyone. On this path, we do not compromise on: 1. Intellectual honesty 2. Argumentation 3. Depth If you align with what we believe, be a Hummingbird in our community. Consume the nectar of our free content and help spread it, pollinating it around.
