The "Mechanics" section is the first section of the five-semester general physics course. The entire course is a foundational course for students in the Physics and Engineering Department and forms the basis for all subsequent studies. The first semester covers classical mechanics, elements of special relativity, elements of oscillation theory, elasticity theory, and continuum mechanics. Both classical results and advances in modern physics are discussed within the context of the material covered. The course emphasizes the study of physical phenomena and laws, and it is anticipated that issues requiring specialized mathematical training will be addressed in subsequent courses in mathematical and theoretical physics. Upon completion of this course, students should be familiar with the fundamental laws of mechanics and be able to apply them to problem solving.
