Peruvian authorities dealt a major blow to drug trafficking after seizing 2.4 tons of cocaine hydrochloride on the high seas, 190 miles off the coast of Talara and Máncora, in the Piura region. The operation was carried out by intelligence teams from the Anti-Drug Police and the Peruvian Navy, who intercepted a speedboat transporting the multi-million dollar shipment destined for abroad. During the search of the vessel, agents found dozens of "bricks" of drugs camouflaged in various compartments and corners of the ship, strategically placed to evade detection. One by one, the packages were removed and counted, totaling 2.4 tons of cocaine hydrochloride, in what is considered the largest seizure on the high seas in recent times in the country. According to initial hypotheses from police authorities, the illegal shipment was destined for the United States. In statements to the program Panorama, retired PNP General José Arturo Ludeña, former head of the Anti-Drug Directorate (Dirandro), did not rule out that the drugs were destined for Mexican international criminal organizations, such as the Sinaloa Cartel or the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
