Nelson Tiny Houses Maple House (Our Second V House) Tiny Tour

Seth Reidy of Nelson Tiny Houses walks through the "Maple House," our second V House, or V Two. At 230 sq. ft., it is one of our largest V Houses. Exterior Design The outside of this house features board and batten siding. We sourced some Hardy Plank for the boards, along with smart trim to match the texture, creating a sleek, modern look. Hardy Plank is a great material because it’s super stable and doesn’t shrink or warp. Once it’s painted, it stays looking great indefinitely. We’ve used fir for all the trim, and we went with black for the windows to match the black soffit and flashing. Kitchen When you step inside, you walk straight into the kitchen. The kitchen is about 8 feet by 9 feet in width, with plenty of cupboard space, both upper and lower. There’s a lot of maple wood in this house — it’s almost a “maple house”! We used it everywhere we could: for the cupboards, trim, backsplash, and countertops. The maple laminate looks sharp, and it was worth the effort. One of the standout features is the interlocking concrete maple countertop. This was a bit of an experiment, but it turned out great! Concrete is a versatile material; you can mold it into nearly any shape, making it fun to work with. The drawers and door fronts are made from MDF, which we painted white. This complements the maple nicely, giving the kitchen a clean, modern look. We used Ikea hardware for the drawers — it’s a great system and makes for easy assembly. For cooking, we’ve just included an electric hot plate, as that was all the client requested. There's also a fridge and additional storage under the countertop. Hidden Kitchen Table One unique feature in the kitchen is the fold-out table. It’s stored in the wall and acts as a divider between the living room and kitchen area. When needed, you pull it out, and it locks into place, with legs that are inlaid and stabilized by pegs that go into the floor. It’s a clever space-saving solution. You can fit about five people around the table if you don’t mind being a little close. Once you’re done, the table folds up and slides back into the wall. Living Room and Storage In the living room, there’s another small fold-down table, also made from maple. It’s a perfect spot for a laptop or writing desk. There's also a futon, which serves as both a couch and a guest bed. One of the design elements we added was an elevated floor in the living room, which provides extra storage underneath. There’s a large hatch in the floor that locks into place, offering access to a ton of storage space. The storage area extends far into the house and can hold a lot of items. We also incorporated several drawers into the elevated floor, including two large drawers under the living room steps and a long drawer above. Loft Area The loft area serves as the main bedroom, and it’s surprisingly spacious. There’s enough headroom, and it’s equipped with outlets, a small window, and lighting. We put a lot of attention into the trim in this house, and the piece in the loft is one of the largest we’ve ever done — 23 feet long and 8 inches wide. It was a challenge to get it into the space, but we managed to bring it in through the window. Bathroom The bathroom is quite large for a tiny house. It's still a work in progress, as we have some tiling and plumbing left to finish, but we wanted to show it to you anyway. The client wanted a rustic look, so we included a cast iron tub and sink. There's also a composting toilet in the bathroom. Below the toilet, we added a small drawer for storing toilet paper or other items. Behind two doors in the bathroom, you'll find an on-demand propane water heater and space for a stackable washer and dryer. We also plan to install in-floor heating beneath the tile once everything is set in place. Composting Toilet The composting toilet uses a simple system that works very well. There’s a 4-inch inline duct fan installed to help reduce odors. The composting bucket is quite large, and when it’s full, you can transfer it to another container.
