Documentary Tema Port Expansion Project MPS Terminal 3
The Ghana continues to consolidate its position as one of West Africa’s most stable and strategically located economies. Situated along the Gulf of Guinea, with direct access to major international shipping routes, Ghana serves not only its domestic market but also landlocked neighbouring countries, positioning it as a natural logistics gateway for the region. At the centre of this strategic ambition is Meridian Port Services Ltd (MPS), a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and Meridian Port Holdings Limited, with Africa Global Logistics and APM Terminals as shareholders. This partnership combines strong public sector backing with global terminal operating expertise, ensuring sound governance, operational excellence, and long-term sustainability. The Tema Port Expansion Project represents one of the most significant maritime infrastructure investments in sub-Saharan Africa. Delivered in two phases, the development introduces a 3,550-metre breakwater, deepened access channels accommodating vessels of up to 16-metre draft, and a total terminal footprint of 127 hectares. The quay wall, 1,400 meters long, provides robust berthing capacity for the world’s largest container vessels. The terminal is equipped with advanced Super Post-Panamax Ship-to-Shore cranes and a fleet of Electric Rubber Tyre Gantry cranes, enabling high productivity, reduced vessel turnaround times, and scalable capacity growth aligned with future demand. This expansion substantially increases Ghana’s container handling capacity, strengthens its competitiveness in regional transshipment, and supports trade growth across West Africa. By accommodating larger vessels and leveraging modern terminal technology, the project reduces logistics costs, enhances supply chain efficiency, and reinforces Ghana’s role as a preferred maritime hub. Beyond infrastructure, the project demonstrates disciplined capital deployment, strong local participation, and a long-term investment horizon. Significant local sourcing, workforce development, and knowledge transfer initiatives contribute to sustainable value creation while supporting national economic growth. The Tema Port Expansion is more than a construction milestone; it is a strategic platform for trade expansion, regional integration, and durable returns. It reflects confidence in Ghana’s macroeconomic resilience, demographic growth, and expanding trade volumes, positioning the country, and its port infrastructure, for sustained long-term performance.
