Drawing Portraits The Easy Way

Instead of worrying about talent, perfect proportions, construction, methods, routines, confidence, expensive materials, or producing a successful drawing, I reduce the process to something much simpler: observe, connect, and respond. By removing unnecessary expectations, I have less to think about. I’m not trying to remember rules, apply formulas, or reach a predetermined standard. My attention stays where it belongs—on the subject. This also makes decision-making easier. Rather than asking, "What's the right technique?" or "How do I draw this feature?" the only question becomes, "How do I respond to what I'm seeing and feeling?" Ironically, by stripping away complexity, my approach often leads to richer, more expressive portraits. That's because I’m free to engage with the subject instead of managing the process. For me, drawing isn't difficult because the act itself is complicated. It's difficult because people burden it with unnecessary beliefs. Remove those beliefs, and what remains is something far more natural, intuitive, and enjoyable. Check out my courses: https://www.thejoyofportraiture.com
