Do I have a drinking problem? Many people only ask themselves this question when alcohol has become more than just a pastime: the after-work beer, the glass of wine to relieve stress, the sparkling wine with friends, or the regular drink to unwind. In Germany, alcohol consumption is socially accepted, legal, and ubiquitous – which is precisely why risky alcohol consumption, alcohol addiction, and early warning signs from the body are often overlooked for a long time. Yet alcohol can cause damage even before noticeable symptoms appear. 📘“Healthy in the Future” – an invitation to long-term health: https://bit.ly/inZukunftgesund 00:00 | Do I have a drinking problem? 02:07 | Facts: Alcohol consumption in Germany 04:55 | Do I have a drinking problem? 06:43 | Alcohol is healthy: 3 positive effects 09:00 | Warning signs from your body 13:00 | Alcohol and libido 14:21 | The “glow-up effect” 15:23 | Harmless or Silent Killer? Precisely because alcohol is legal, accepted, and readily available everywhere, problematic consumption is often not perceived as a risk. Many affected individuals continue to function normally for a long time and don't realize that their bodies and minds are already changing. Risky alcohol consumption doesn't just affect "fringe groups," but perfectly ordinary people: colleagues, friends, neighbors, family members—and possibly even yourself. An alcohol problem isn't only evident when someone drinks in the morning or completely loses control. Problematic patterns can develop much earlier. Warning questions include: Do I reach for a drink when I'm stressed? Is alcohol my reward after a tiring day? Do I drink to sleep better, relax, or regulate my emotions? A high tolerance can also be a warning sign: If you can drink larger amounts without others noticing much, you may have already developed a physical tolerance. From a medical perspective, problematic consumption is based, among other things, on the amount consumed: For women, more than about 12 grams of pure alcohol per day, and for men, more than about 24 grams per day, is considered risky. This corresponds roughly to a small glass of wine or beer for women, or about two small beers or a quarter liter of wine for men. Another warning sign: If you find it difficult to remain completely alcohol-free for at least two days a week, you should critically examine your relationship with alcohol.
