For many people, the term 'Medieval' is synonymous with 'superstition', 'ignorance', or 'oppression'. A time so terrible that it is remembered almost as a collective trauma for all of human history. However, is this an accurate view of the period that gave rise to the great cathedrals and scholastic thought? In the inaugural lesson of the course Medieval Black Legends, we clarify where this view of the Middle Ages comes from and address the legend of 'obscurantism', the idea that the Church oppressed consciences and hindered progress in order to better manipulate the masses.
