It is based on Taku Kaneko's "Series Approaching the Reality 021: The Battle of Nagashino - Nobunaga's Shattering of Katsuyori's Hegemony -". In April 1573, Takeda Shingen died in the midst of his invasion of Totomi and Mikawa provinces. After Shingen's death, Katsuyori succeeded him as head of the Takeda family. Despite Shingen's will to keep his death a secret for three years, Ieyasu soon learned of it. Ieyasu immediately attacked and captured Nagashino Castle in Okumikawa, and in February 1575, he placed Okudaira Nobumasa, who had defected from the Takeda side, in charge of its defense. Meanwhile, on March 6, Oda Nobunaga went to Kyoto to provide financial assistance to the imperial court and demonstrate his intention to maintain order in the country after the expulsion of Yoshiaki. Also in March, he issued a summons to march out for an attack on Honganji Temple in April. This also became known to anti-Nobunaga forces. As per the summons, Nobunaga marched out on April 6 to attack Honganji Temple in Kawachi province. However, this campaign was limited to capturing several surrounding castles and is considered preparation for a full-scale attack on Honganji Temple that autumn. Seeing Nobunaga's actions, Katsuyori invaded Mikawa in March to try and ease up on the attack on Honganji. However, it is also said that Katsuyori had another motive: he was cooperating with a plan by Ooka Yashiro, a hereditary deputy of Ieyasu, to seize Okazaki Castle and lure the invading Takeda army into Okazaki, but this plan failed. The Takeda army's advance guard captured several castles in Asuke in April. Katsuyori later marched out to join them, but the capture of Okazaki Castle had failed, and Katsuyori realized that Yoshida Castle would not be easily captured as Ieyasu was holed up there. He then turned his attention to Nagashino Castle, which had been captured two years earlier and was now defended by Okudaira Nobumasa, who had betrayed him. Thus, the Battle of Nagashino and the Siege of Nagashino Castle are thought to have occurred largely by chance. The Takeda army besieged Nagashino Castle from May 1st, launching intermittent attacks. Nagashino Castle, built on a cliff at the confluence of the Toyokawa and Uregawa rivers, still retains its main enclosure and surrounding moats and earthworks, making it a formidable fortress. However, the defending Okudaira forces numbered between 200 and 250 men, and were no match for the overwhelming Takeda forces. Ieyasu requested reinforcements from Nobunaga. Nobunaga arrived at Shitaragahara on May 18th, and fortified his defenses by constructing a fence along the Rengo River, a low-lying area less visible to the Takeda army. At the time, the area around the Rengo River was apparently a wetland, further enhancing its defensive capabilities. Katsuyori apparently underestimated the combined forces of Nobunaga and Ieyasu. At a war council on the 19th, he decided to wage a decisive battle, and on the 20th, he moved his entire army westward, leaving a contingent of troops to besiege Nagashino Castle, and deployed them on the hills east of the Rengo River. Seeing this, Nobunaga ordered a surprise attack with 4,000 soldiers on the Takeda forces surrounding Nagashino Castle, including the Tobisuyama fort. Sakai Tadatsugu's army departed on the night of the 20th and began their attack on the Takeda forts early the following morning, the 21st. Tadatsugu's army not only defeated the defenders but also drove away the Takeda forces besieging Nagashino Ca...
