Šibenik is a beautiful historical city situated on quite a spectacular spot - right on the slopes of a hill overlooking a wide bay in which river Krka, known for its great beauty, enters the Adriatic sea. It is one of the largest Croatian coastal cities, located in the middle of the Adriatic, almost exactly between two other important Dalmatian cities - Zadar and Split. Šibenik-Knin County, of which Šibenik is the center, can boast of particularly beautiful nature, including two national parks: Kornati Islands and river Krka. The town itself is a typical Dalmatian town with narrow streets and stone buildings. Its particularity lies in a fact that it was not, like many other Adriatic towns, founded by Greeks, Illyrians or Romans but by Croats in the 9th century. Later on, however, its history followed the same pattern of frequent changing of rulers and governments that was the destiny of all the Dalmatian towns. The most prominent building is The Cathedral of St. James (Katedrala sv. Jakova) - Renaissance Catholic basilica under the UNESCO World Heritage protection (10:55). If you are a newcomer a stroll around Šibenik might feel a bit like finding your way in a labyrinth - you could get easily lost in a maze of tiny passages, unexpected steps, winding streets and cozy hidden squares.
