Why Busch Gardens Built a $12 Million Arctic Dome in Texas Then Demolished It

In 1971, Anheuser-Busch spent $12 million building an exotic theme park in Houston with elephants, Bengal tigers, polar bears, and an ice cave in the middle of Texas. Two years later, it was gone and erased so completely most local residents have no idea it ever existed. Busch Gardens Houston wasn't a failure of ambition. It had an Asian-themed landscape, exotic animal exhibits, and a refrigerated Arctic dome housing penguins and polar bears in one of the hottest cities in America. The quality was never the problem. The problem was location as it was built next to an industrial brewery with no tourism infrastructure, competing directly against Six Flags Astroworld, which had already won Houston's families over. Projections called for 800,000 visitors a year. The park reportedly lost $4 million in a single quarter, which was roughly $30 million today. #BuschGardensHouston #AbandonedThemePark #ForgottenAmerica #HoustonHistory #LostThemeParks #TexasHistory #ThemeParkSecrets #AmusementParkHistory #ForgottenParks #1970sAmerica Timestamps: 0:00 - Introduction 0:27 - Where the Busch Gardens concept came from 1:58 - Busch Gardens Tampa and the formula that worked 2:37 - Why Houston seemed like the obvious next move 2:58 - The industrial location nobody questioned 4:15 - 1971: Inside the park; animals, the ice cave, and the Asian theme 5:31 - Attendance falls short and the losses begin 7:26 - Six Flags Astroworld and the competition problem 8:32 - The talent exodus to Opryland 8:52 - Closure by the end of 1972 9:46 - The lesson that shaped Williamsburg 11:09 - Why almost nothing remains today 👇 Had you ever heard of Busch Gardens Houston before this video?
