From a very young age, I recognized that my God-given gifts and natural talent was the ability to make a lot of money, and make it fast. I know, I know what you’re thinking… This guy - what can he teach me if he’s naturally gifted at making money? The answer: A lot. Because there’s a plot twist: This talent of mine is both a blessing and a curse. “WHAT? How can making money FAST be a curse?” Because… It Landed Me In Prison! I didn’t realize this until it was far too late, but my talent for making money has a blind spot, and that blind spot is being able to successfully multi-task, and run the day-to-day operations of my many businesses. Filing, emails, phone calls, spreadsheets, intake forms - those things don’t excite me, which is why I hire other people to do those tasks for me! But here’s where I made my FIRST big mistake: Before I was sentenced to five years in prison, I was all over the place. My mental health agency was growing at rapid speed, and I had just employed my 300th staff member, yet… My tax business still needed my attention. I still had several financial advisory clients with whom I was working. My restaurant was getting busier and busier and on a weekly basis, I was traveling from North to South Carolina to oversee the running of things there, too. My life was what they call chaotic. Chaotic, out of control, and far from organized. One day, I got a phone call. Well actually, I received several. One of the managers from my mental health care agency in Columbia kept calling, and calling, and calling… Eventually, I picked up. He said, “Hey Idris, we have some auditors here from Medicaid.” This was around the time there was a big health fraud scare in the States, so I kind of saw it coming. I wasn’t worried in the slightest. In my eyes, this was just a simple routine check that would last maybe 5 minutes or so. I got them on the phone, and they requested to see files on X, Y, and Z. Immediately I said, “Sure, OK, my office manager should be able to give you anything you need to see.” There was a brief pause. That’s odd, I thought. And that’s when I heard my office manager in the background… “Well, that’s the problem Idris... We don’t have those files”.
