Found across India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Southeast Asia, this small black waterbird spends much of its life diving beneath lakes, ponds, rivers, wetlands, and village tanks in search of fish. Unlike ducks, the Little Cormorant does not have fully waterproof feathers. Its feathers absorb some water, which reduces buoyancy and helps the bird dive faster and stay underwater while chasing fish. After fishing, it is often seen sitting with wings spread open to dry them in the sun — one of the most recognizable behaviors of cormorants. This bird is an expert hunter. It can disappear underwater for several seconds and swim using powerful webbed feet while steering with its tail and body. Most of its diet consists of small fish, but it may also eat frogs, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and tadpoles depending on habitat and season. Little Cormorants usually live in groups and often form colonies with herons, egrets, ibises, and other waterbirds. During breeding season, they build stick nests on trees near water bodies. Both male and female participate in nest building, egg incubation, and chick care. The chicks hatch naked and helpless, depending completely on their parents for warmth and food. These birds play an important ecological role in freshwater ecosystems by helping control fish populations and acting as indicators of wetland health.
