A mound the size of a dinner plate, fresh-pushed-up dirt the color of cinnamon, right in the middle of where the children walked yesterday. You take one step closer and the whole top of the mound moves — thousands of small red bodies boiling up out of the ground in seconds, climbing whatever they can climb, stinging anything warm. Fire ants. The most aggressive insect in this country, and the one pest that no folk remedy has truly mastered in two hundred years of folks trying. And folks have tried everything. Coffee grounds. Grits. Dish soap. Bleach. Gasoline lit on fire. Boiling water. Cinnamon. Cornmeal. You name a household substance and someone, somewhere, has poured it on a fire ant mound and sworn it worked. In this video I walk you through the five wildest DIY fire ant remedies folks have sworn by — and I tell you the honest truth about each one. Which ones do nothing. Which ones kill a few surface ants but leave the queen alive in her deep castle. And which one I will not put on this channel under any circumstance, no matter how many people swear by it, because the cost of a single mistake is too high. The honest test results: 1. Coffee grounds — folk myth. Does not kill the colony. The ants either ignore the grounds or carry them into the mound as bedding material. 2. Grits — pure folklore. The "ants eat the grits and explode" story is biologically impossible because ants cannot swallow solid food at all. They liquefy it first. 3. Dish soap and water — partially works. Kills surface ants by breaking their wax cuticle and drowning them. Does not reach the queen — a fire ant colony runs 10-12 feet deep into the soil. New mound forms 3 feet away within a week. 4. Bleach — same partial result as soap, plus collateral damage. Kills your grass, kills helpful earthworms, contaminates soil, harsh on dogs and pets that walk through the wet area. 5. Gasoline poured on the mound and lit on fire — I will not recommend this. The testing shows it works on the colony, but I have seen barns burn from less. Real burn injuries every summer. Five gallons of gasoline reaches the water table in many places — families have had to drill new wells after contamination. Pouring gasoline on the soil is also a violation of the Clean Water Act and state environmental codes in most states. Even if it works, do not do this on your land. Then — what actually works: I am Amish, and I will not leave you with only a list of failures. The real method that careful country folks have used for decades: Boric acid + sugar water bait. One cup of warm water, eight teaspoons of plain white sugar, half a teaspoon of pure boric acid powder. Stir until dissolved. Pour a tablespoon into small shallow containers and place them a few feet from the mound — not on the mound itself. The workers carry the bait back to the colony, feed the queen, and the colony dies in three to seven days. Same trophallaxis principle we used on the wasps. Three dollars at any hardware store, lasts years. Boiling water. Three to four gallons of boiling water poured slowly into the central opening of the mound. Free, gentle, and the extension offices show this kills about 60% of treated mounds. The risk is the kettle itself — wear boots, long pants, steady hands. Diatomaceous earth dusted on the surface as a supplement to the bait. Kills the workers that emerge while the bait works on the colony from the inside. Safety word baked in plainly: Fire ants are dangerous. A disturbed mound puts hundreds of stinging ants in seconds. Never stand directly on a mound. Wear boots and long pants. Keep small children and anyone with sting allergies far away from any treatment. Boric acid up high, out of reach of children. The pest-control truck wants four hundred dollars a visit and uses chemicals that kill the bees and butterflies along with the ants.
