Engine valve clearance consists of leaving a small gap between the rocker arm and the stem stop of the intake and exhaust valves. This clearance is specified by the engine manufacturer, but in any case, it is only a few tenths of a millimeter. A smaller clearance than specified by the manufacturer will leave the engine valves open, significantly reducing compression and therefore power. On the other hand, if the valve clearance is too high, it will produce a strong knocking noise that can damage the engine and will also reduce intake and exhaust timing, impairing engine power.
