Journée mondiale du Réfugié 2026 : pour une intégration socio-économique réussie des réfugiés

World Refugee Day 2026: Towards the Successful Socio-Economic Integration of Refugees in Burkina Faso The Permanent Secretariat of the National Commission for Refugees (SP/CONAREF) presented the official activities commemorating World Refugee Day during a press conference held on Monday, June 15, 2026, in Ouagadougou. The 2026 edition of World Refugee Day, observed on June 20, emphasizes solidarity, integration, and the inclusion of refugees. The national theme for the commemoration of World Refugee Day is: “Welcome and Social Cohesion: How to Strengthen Links Between Refugees and Host Communities for Better Socio-Economic Integration in Burkina Faso.” This year, the National Commission for Refugees (CONAREF) will focus on the successful integration of refugees through their socio-economic inclusion. The goal is to ensure that refugees become active participants in development. The commemorative activities marking World Refugee Day will take place on June 20, 2026, in Ouahigouya, in the Yaadga region. These activities will focus in particular on the national strategy for refugee integration, aiming to move beyond a system of dependency. “Our ambition is to combat prejudice against refugees, strengthen cohesion, promote sustainable solutions, and above all, uphold the values of peace, tolerance, and integrity,” stated Vlé Fulbert Traoré, Permanent Secretary of the National Commission for Refugees (CONAREF). Furthermore, CONAREF will work on involving the private sector in refugee management, he added. “In Ouahigouya, we will hold a dialogue with the private sector and employers to discuss employment opportunities for refugees,” added Vlé F. Traoré. Burkina Faso hosts approximately 45,000 refugees, compared to 500 in 2012. The city of Ouahigouya alone shelters 3,500 refugees. The Permanent Secretariat of the National Commission for Refugees (SP/CONAREF) is responsible at the national level for the management of refugees, stateless persons, and migration flows. SP/CONAREF ensures the protection of those forced into exile and seeks durable solutions for refugees, enabling them to integrate and rebuild their lives.
