After Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu resigned from the Republican People's Party (CHP) and joined the AK Party, the first council meeting she did not attend erupted in tension and a brawl, leading to the postponement of the session. The Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Council reconvened today under Çerçioğlu's leadership for its September meeting. Before the council meeting, CHP metropolitan council members and other parties gathered at the CHP Aydın Provincial Headquarters and marched to the meeting building. Approaching the municipal building, CHP council members were met by municipal police, private security, and security personnel via a barricaded street in front of the municipality. There, the names of CHP council members were checked against a list, and any accompanying press members were admitted to the building after being subjected to press card checks. During this time, arguments broke out between the private security and the council members. Similar practices continued at the entrance to the main municipal building and on the floor where the council hall is located. Security personnel were observed taking security measures on all floors of the municipal building. Tensions arose as CHP council members entered the hall. Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Polat Mersin, who was waiting at the press entrance to the council hall, was captured on camera instructing private security personnel to prevent the ANKA News Agency team from filming. The meeting began in the council hall, where security forces had taken extensive security measures, under the leadership of Aydın Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu. A group seen entering the council hall earlier chanted slogans in support of Çerçioğlu. During the session, Çerçioğlu did not include the CHP Group's motions on the agenda and rejected their requests to speak. Çerçioğlu considered the motions rejected by the CHP Group's majority vote as accepted and referred them to the committees. Following the recess, Çerçioğlu responded positively to requests to speak from Mayor Nuri Güler, Mayor of Köşk and AK Party Spokesperson for the Metropolitan Municipal Council, and Polat Mersin, an independent council member and Acting Mayor who had resigned from the CHP along with him. After Çerçioğlu adjourned the session, the CHP Parliamentary Group held a press conference. In front of the provincial headquarters, CHP Aydın Provincial Chair Hikmet Saatçı stated that they had held a trilateral meeting with Aydın Governor Yakup Canpolat and AK Party Provincial Chair Mehmet Erdem prior to the council meeting. Saatçı said, "We complied with everything the Governor of Aydın said at the meeting, fulfilling our obligations as the CHP Aydın Provincial Chair. We made no compromises on our integrity or dignity. We kept our promises. I'm addressing the Governor of Aydın from here: How can I trust you when Mr. Governor convenes us again? I have no say in the matter of security measures. They've been taken perfectly. But I sent the AKP Provincial Chair a message before going to the meeting. They couldn't even respond by asking, 'Did we discuss something like this at the governor's office this morning?' They can't. That's the AKP's mindset. They're such liars. As the Republican People's Party, we keep our promises. We keep our promises to the people. We keep our promises to the governor of the state. But they're telling us, 'Don't keep them.' We won't break our promises again. We will continue on our path as we know it. We will not deviate from truth. We will not deviate from right, the rule of law, or justice. This is the principle of the Republican People's Party. When we come to power in the elections to be held in three years, the situation we're experiencing today will not occur."
