Igor Guberman is a Russian poet and prose writer, widely known for his aphoristic and satirical quatrains, or "gariks." In 1979, Guberman was arrested on trumped-up charges of purchasing stolen icons and sentenced to five years in prison. Not wanting an unnecessary political trial, the authorities tried Guberman as a criminal under the article on speculation. In 1984, the poet returned from Siberia, and in 1988, he emigrated from the USSR to Israel, where he lives in Jerusalem.
