Franck: Prélude, fugue et variation, op. 18, (arr. H. Bauer) (20260410)

🎹: Steinway M 📆: 2026/04/10 This is one of Franck’s most well-known organ compositions and a staple of the French Romantic organ repertoire. In 1858, at age 36, Franck was appointed titular organist at the new Basilica of Saint Clotilde in Paris, where he inaugurated one of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll’s innovative three-manual pipe organ. His post-church service improvisations on this organ, which attracted many listeners including Franz Liszt, eventually inspired the Six Pièces pour Grand Orgue (1856 and 1864). The Prélude, Fugue et Variation in B minor, composed between 1860 and 1862, is the third in this set and was dedicated to fellow organist Camille Saint-Saëns; the balance and clarity of the sound texture and the use of the prelude and fugue reflect Saint-Saëns’ classical ideals. In 1910, pianist Harold Bauer produced a faithful and idiomatic transcription for solo piano. The Prélude (Andantino) opens with a gentle 5-measure phrase whose melody rises by step and descends in skips; it is repeated thrice, each with subtle variations. A second theme follows, characterized by upward leaps of consecutively increasing intervals, supported by pedal tones in the bass. With each repetition, the texture thickens and the dynamic intensity grows, culminating before the return of the opening melody, now ethereal and remote, to close the movement in the dominant minor. A brief Lento section introduces the Fugue. This 9-measure interlude features a magnificent tutti texture and introduces the motifs that comprise the fugue’s subject. The Fugue, solemn and slightly eerie, unfolds in 3 voices, beginning in the middle register then expanding sequentially to the upper and lower registers. After a forte statement of the subject in the dominant key, a stretto leads to a grand closing that features a rising stepwise line that recalls the contour of the Prélude’s opening theme. The final Variation, played attacca, continues seamlessly from the final bass note of the Fugue (which is held over in the organ score) back in the tonic key of B minor. It is a restatement of the Prélude with an active accompaniment of flowing 16th notes, whose gentle undulation evokes a sense of inevitability.
