Normaldruckhydrozephalus (NPH)

This video discusses normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), which is characterized by the triad of progressive gait disturbance with a wide-based, shuffling gait, dementia, and urinary incontinence (Hakim's triad). CT/MRI scans reveal enlarged internal cerebrospinal fluid spaces, while external spaces appear normal or narrow. A transient improvement in symptoms after a spinal tap test is diagnostically significant. Treatment involves the permanent drainage of cerebrospinal fluid via surgical placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.
