Why Sensitive Souls Struggle With the Physical World

Many of you have heard me speak about some of my struggles. As I've gotten older, I've become more aware of their nature, and I've spoken about them more openly because I know there are many people who can relate. There are sensitive souls who are more comfortable with the abstract than with the physical, and sometimes simply navigating the physical world can feel overwhelming. I had what felt like a meltdown over something as simple as an apron. It wasn't really about the apron. It was about the frustration of feeling completely at home with ideas and abstract concepts, yet feeling lost when it comes to ordinary physical tasks. Whether it's getting lost a mile from my own house without a GPS, forgetting where I put things, struggling with everyday logistics, or feeling overwhelmed by simple responsibilities, those moments can trigger a deep sense of inadequacy that many sensitive souls know all too well. That's why I find myself relating to the spies in Parshas Shelach. They wanted to remain in the wilderness, immersed in a spiritual existence, instead of entering a world of farming, homes, repairs, and physical responsibilities. But the spies were wrong. They chose what felt comfortable for sensitive souls instead of what Hashem wanted from them. Their mission—and ours—is to bring holiness into the physical world, not escape from it. As difficult as the physical world can sometimes feel, Hashem sent our souls into bodies for a reason. We aren't meant to fear physicality, reject it, or run from it.
