БАЛТИЙСКИЙ КАПКАН. ПОЧЕМУ ГИТЛЕР ТРИЖДЫ ОТКАЗАЛ В ОТВОДЕ ВОЙСК ИЗ ПРИБАЛТИКИ?

In the fall of 1944, a single narrow strip of Lithuanian land remained on the Soviet general's map—a hundred kilometers, connecting Army Group North with the rest of Germany. Cutting it meant trapping thirty-three German divisions, hundreds of thousands of soldiers, on the Baltic coast. The German general tried three times to persuade Hitler to withdraw his troops. Hitler refused three times: the Baltics were a matter of political will, not military mathematics. While the debate raged at the Führer's headquarters, two thousand Soviet guns opened fire simultaneously, and the ground in Lithuania shook so violently that dishes fell from shelves in the surrounding villages. In six days, the troops marched one hundred and thirty kilometers and reached the sea. The city that Hitler personally "returned" to the Reich in 1939 to thunderous applause remained under siege for another three months—and the army group, trapped in the Latvian Triangle, would hold out until the very day of Germany's capitulation, seven months awaiting an evacuation that would never happen. This is the story of a corridor that was cut once—and never reopened until the end of the war. #memeloperation #1944 #baltics #greatpatriotic #militaryhistory #bagramyan #curlandpocket #klaipeda #armygroupnorth #guderian #easternfront #lithuania #balticfleet #steiner #schörner #curland #1stbalticfront #balticoperation #capitulation1945 #eastprussia
