The Cristero War (1926-1929) was an armed conflict that encompassed much of Mexican territory, with its epicenter in the Bajío region. Cristero militias fought against the policies of Plutarco Elías Calles's government; the clergy and hierarchy openly participated with the approval of Rome. Dozens of guerrilla priests fell in combat, and Calles alone admitted to ordering the execution of fifty priests. The guerrilla movement spread to Mexico City, where cells of Catholic Action carried out the assassination of General Álvaro Obregón in 1928.
