Designed to accommodate 350,000 people, it became one of the largest in the USSR. Tram lines immediately began to extend to Saltivka. Construction of most of these lines was completed by the mid-1970s, and trams became the main form of public transportation in Saltivka until 1986, when the second phase of the Saltivka metro line was completed. The population of Saltivka grew, and the load on public transportation increased. More and more trams needed to be deployed to Saltivka routes, making it increasingly difficult for the three existing Kharkiv tram depots to cope. After all, they also served the rest of the city. Furthermore, the enormous number of trams running empty clearly indicated the need for a new tram depot. Finally, in the early 1980s, construction of a tram depot, named "Saltovskoye," began near the Lva Tolstogo Street terminus. Designed to handle 300 trams, the depot occupied an area of ​​20.8 hectares. At the time, it was the largest depot in the entire USSR. The first phase of the new construction, capable of handling 100 trams, was commissioned in October 1982. A year later, the depot's capacity was increased to its design capacity. Throughout its history, the depot operated only one model of tram: the Tatra-T3. It was from this depot that three-car systems of this model were deployed on route 23. No other Kharkiv depot deployed such systems. Initially, the depot's tram fleet consisted of trams transferred from other depots. On the depot's opening day, many trams departed their old depots in the morning and returned to Saltivske in the evening. Subsequently, the depot received a large batch of new trams, which still form the bulk of the depot's rolling stock. In addition to passenger cars, the depot houses a wide variety of specialized equipment. Most of this equipment is operated by the track service. Specifically, the depot is home to two VPRS-500 track machines.
