Adam Smith is considered the father of economics. His work, known as The Wealth of Nations (1776), gave rise to an economic system that has influenced Western civilization to this day. In his work, Smith opposes the mercantilist thinking of the time, asserting that a nation's wealth should not be measured by the amount of gold accumulated, but by the real goods and services available to its citizens. For Smith, the progress of society is achieved through economic freedom, and he opposed any state intervention in the economy.
