From the imposing São Jorge Castle, which offers panoramic views of the city, to the colorful buildings lining the Tagus River, Lisbon is a feast for the senses.Lisbon has a rich history dating back to the Phoenicians. The city was conquered by the Romans in 202 BC and remained under Roman rule for centuries. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lisbon was ruled by the Visigoths and then the Moors. In the 12th century, Lisbon was reconquered by the Christians and became the capital of Portugal. Lisbon played a key role in the Age of Exploration, as it was the starting point for many voyages of discovery. The city was devastated by an earthquake in 1755, but it was rebuilt and remains one of the most important cities in Portugal.
