Wadi Hajir is not a normal hike. It is one of the most physically and psychologically demanding canyon routes in Oman, combining swimming, scrambling, cave passages, waterfall ascents, exposed cliff traverses. Distance from Ruwi: Approximately 145 km Driving Time: Approximately 1 hour 50 minutes Location: 23.203842, 57.513133 (Al Hijir) This route goes far beyond conventional hiking and should be approached as a serious canyon adventure requiring experience, sound judgment, and appropriate technical equipment. To illustrate the difficulty of this route, a recent group of 22 experienced hikers—many of whom hike regularly and have years of experience—attempted it. Only 6 completed the full route. The remainder chose to turn back due to the exposure, technical terrain, and extremely slippery cliff sections. Route Overview The first 1–2 km are relatively manageable and can be negotiated by most hikers. Beyond this point, the character of the route changes dramatically. Participants should expect: Continuous scrambling. Frequent movement on all fours Swimming through deep pools Rope-assisted waterfall ascents Exposed cliff traverses Dark cave-like passages Slippery polished rock surfaces. At several points, the route becomes a continuous sequence of climbing, swimming, scrambling, rope work, cave navigation, and further climbing rather than traditional hiking. This is a route for confident and experienced adventurers who are comfortable with heights, exposure, water crossings, and sustained technical movement in a remote canyon environment.
