During a visit to Greece in October, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin called it a "European model" for welcoming asylum seekers. The Samos camp is closed, isolated, far from the images of overwhelmed refugee reception centers, such as the Moria camp on Lesbos, dubbed the "camp of shame." Except that asylum applications always take time, and the refugees are surrounded by barbed wire and video surveillance.
