Objects not only serve practical purposes, but also tell stories about identity, economics, technology, and emotions. This is how Ana Elena Mallet, an independent curator specializing in design, shares her vision of the relevance of objects and material culture in everyday life. Mallet emphasizes the importance of observing and appreciating everyday objects, from a chair to the clothes we wear, and how they reflect who we are and what we aspire to. She addresses topics such as the relationship between design, architecture, and fashion, underscoring the need to recognize the cultural value of these fields in Mexico, where greater institutionalization and documentation, especially in fashion, is still lacking. She discusses cultural appropriation, proposing that all creation implies appropriation, but that it is essential to do so with awareness, recognition, and, when appropriate, giving back. Mallet also reflects on vocation and profession, encouraging new generations to pursue what they are passionate about and to build communities and ecosystems around their interests. She recounts her experience curating a Latin American design exhibition at MoMA, which allowed her to highlight stories and objects that are underrepresented internationally. Among the lessons that can be applied to daily life are: observing and questioning the environment, valuing material culture, finding passion in work, understanding the importance of collaboration and recognition, and maintaining a critical and reflective attitude toward technological and cultural changes. 00:00 - Relationship between objects and people 05:43 - Criteria for considering one object more important than another 10:02 - How objects influence our routines and the role of design 15:19 - Experience with architecture and its daily impact 18:52 - Fashion's relationship with people and museums 24:54 - Cultural appropriation and the defense of Mexican art 30:32 - Experience at the MoMA in New York 36:45 - The relationship between literature and curatorship 40:39 - Discovering one's vocation and advice for young people 46:47 - The importance of museums
