Londoners of 1955: Trafalgar Square to the East End in Color
This rare colour home-movie footage from 1955 begins with some of London's most famous landmarks before taking us somewhere much less often seen on film: the bustling streets and markets of the East End. The journey starts in central London, with views of Trafalgar Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Regent Palace Hotel, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London. Along the way, the camera captures everyday moments, including a US sailor apparently giving sweets to local children. The second half of the film is a remarkable record of East End life in post-war London. We see what appears to be Bishopsgate before arriving at the famous Petticoat Lane Market, where traders and shoppers provide a vivid snapshot of a vanished world. Highlights include: • Trafalgar Square and St Martin-in-the-Fields • The Regent Palace Hotel • Tower Bridge and the Tower of London • A US sailor with local children • Streets of the East End and Bishopsgate • Petticoat Lane Market in full swing • Stallholders selling bags, belts, hats, dresses, carpets and flowers • Sarsaparilla advertised at just 4d a glass • Young Londoner 'Mods' sporting fashionable quiffs and sideburns • A market trader selling novelty neckties and smiling for the camera • Stuffed animals, household goods and everyday street commerce • A peaceful London square where people relax and read newspapers in the afternoon sun • Historic theatre billboards advertising The Crazy Gang and Jimmy Edwards More than just a tour of London's landmarks, this film offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in the East End during the 1950s. The faces, fashions, businesses and street scenes preserved here provide an invaluable record of a London that has largely disappeared.
